Many East Texas children do not own a book or have books in their homes. For most low-income families, parents’ work to provide basic needs such as shelter, food and transportation. Books are a luxury item in these households.

Combatting the Summer Slide

Research  shows  that children who read over the summer break have higher test scores and stay in school. Children without access to books, are less likely to develop the critical early foundation and skills needed to be successful in life.
